Rice’s antics received criticism on a national level, with comments about the coach coming from prominent NBA players such as LeBron James.
In November RU athletic director Tim Pernetti was given a videotape of Rice’s conduct during practice. He penalized Rice with a three game suspension, $75,000 fine and ordered to attend anger management classes.
university president Robert Barchi, who signed off on the penalty, released the following statement Wednesday:
"Yesterday, I personally reviewed the video evidence, which shows a chronic and pervasive pattern of disturbing behavior," Barchi said in a statement. "I have now reached the conclusion that Coach Rice cannot continue to serve effectively in a position that demands the highest levels of leadership, responsibility and public accountability. He cannot continue to coach at Rutgers University."
With the firing, RU will go on a national search for his replacement.
In three season at the helm, Rice led the Scarlet Knights to a 44-51 overall record, finishin 16-38 in Big East play. The Scarlet Knights finished outside the top 10 all three seasons under Rice.
